Schmidt Sciences is a philanthropy dedicated to fostering the advancement of science and technology. We approach this by identifying under-supported or unconventional areas of exploration and discovery in order to accelerate and deepen our understanding of the natural world and develop solutions to global issues.

We seek ideas, people, and techniques across disciplines of science and technology to catalyze results for society. Our focus areas include AI and Advanced Computing, Astrophysics and Space, Biosciences, Climate, and Cross-Science programs.

AI & Advanced Computing: The AI & Advanced Computing Institute at Schmidt Sciences supports fundamental research in artificial intelligence (AI), the application of AI and data science across a wide variety of disciplines, and the creation of high-impact research platforms that can speed discovery.

Astrophysics & Space: The Astrophysics Institute aims to rapidly expand our knowledge of the universe through the creation of innovative hardware and software platforms.

Biosciences: The Biosciences Institute aims to apply the full potential of biology toward solving many of today’s most pressing challenges. We strive to advance our understanding of biology and facilitate the transition of biological innovations into the real world for public benefit.

Climate: The Climate Institute aims to advance the fundamental science required to thrive on a warming planet. Our climate programs support the transformational and transdisciplinary research networks required for planning and evaluation of greenhouse gas mitigation strategies, and generate the necessary data, tools, platforms and innovative technologies to understand our planet.

Cross-Science: The Cross-Science Institute aims to break down existing barriers in the scientific research ecosystem through the support of ambitious thinkers, advanced technologies, and foundational tools that improve scientific discovery.
