NSERC & SSHRC: Submit extension requests before end date!

In the 2024 updates to the Tri-Agency Guide on Financial Administration (TAGFA), the section on Extension period for the authority to use grant funds was updated to clarify that requests for grant extensions will not be considered after the end date of a grant has passed. Requests for such extensions must be made during the final year of the authority period to use grant funds (i.e. during the 1-year automatic extension), and prior to the end of grant date.

Some institutions and recipients were not aware of this change. NSERC, SSHRC and TIPS have decided that until December 31, 2024, they will accept and consider extension requests for grants ending since April 1, 2024. This exception will not be extended.

If the extension is not approved, the grant recipient will have three months to pay all expenses incurred before the grant end date. Please see the TAGFA, part 3, section on Extension period for the authority to use grant funds for full details and conditions.

NOTE for HSS Principal Investigators:

Memorial, as the administering institution is responsible for submitting the extension request to the appropriate agency using the Grant Amendment Form - this means that niether the PI, nor the department, should forward extension requests to the Tri-Agencies. For all amendments, your first point of contact should be the HSS GFOs.

For instructions on how to request an extension, see "How do I amend a grant (Tri-Agency)" here: https://www.mun.ca/hss/research/for-researchers/how-do-i-/
