[Message from Tri-Agencies:]
Dear Partner in Indigenous Research Reconciliation,
Are you, or someone you know of, interested in providing advice and guidance to the Federal Government funding agencies on how Indigenous Research is supported? We are seeking new members to join the Tri-agency’s “Reference Group for the Appropriate Review of Indigenous Research”. We would appreciate if you would share this expression of interest widely within your network.
What is the Reference Group for the Appropriate Review of Indigenous Research?
The Reference Group for the Appropriate Review of Indigenous Research (Reference Group) is a community group of First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals that provide advice to CIHR, SSHRC and NSERC (collectively known as the ‘Tri-agencies’) on ethically and culturally safe peer review approaches and practices for research conducted by and with First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
For more information about the Reference Group, or other work relating to Indigenous Research at NSERC, please visit https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/IR-RA/index_eng.asp
Objectives
The Reference Group’s collective understanding on Indigenous research and Indigenous Knowledges is greatly valued as they advise the Tri-agencies on a range of topics relating to improving the appropriate review of Indigenous Research. Since their work began, the Reference Group has provided impactful advice on how the Tri-agencies approach a range of items like; support letters from Indigenous Communities, Indigenous Identity, Defining “Indigenous Research”, conflict of interest, funding program improvements, how proposed projects are reviewed, etc.
Time Commitment and Compensation
Members attend 2 hour meetings on an approximate bi-monthly basis, with occasional increased meeting frequency as priorities arise. There is also a once per year face to face meeting. Reference Group membership is voluntary. Honorarium is available to members who are not employed or compensated for their time on the Reference Group. Expenses will also be covered to attend any in-person meetings according to the Government of Canada rates.
Selection Process
Members will be selected using recommendations from the existing Reference Group members. Selection criteria will consider:
Diversity to reflect Canada’s diverse First Nation, Inuit and Metis people
Diversity of various levels of education and experience
Gender equity
Geographic diversity.
