Message to the Memorial community about travel to the U.S.

The personal safety of Memorial University travellers is a priority for the university, and all share the responsibility for assessing and managing the risk of international travel.

The Travel Outside of Canada Committee recommends the following to the Memorial University community:

University travellers going to the U.S. are advised to review the Government of Canada's travel advisory and International SOS, add your trip to Memorial’s Travel Registry and complete Registration of Canadians Abroad (if applicable). These resources can help you make informed decisions and travel safely outside Canada.

Travellers who fall into the following categories, as outlined by the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) in an April 15, 2025, message, are also advised to exercise due diligence:

·        Citizens or residents of a country identified in media reports as likely to be subject to a travel ban

·        Citizens or residents of a country where there are diplomatic tensions with the U.S.

·        Travellers with passport stamps evidencing recent travel to countries that may be subject to a travel ban or where there are diplomatic tensions with the U.S.

·        Those who have expressed negative opinions about the current U.S. administration or its policies

·        Those whose research could be seen as being at odds with the position of the current U.S. administration

·        Travellers who are transgender or whose travel documents indicate a sex other than their sex assigned at birth

A reminder that customs officers have the right to inspect electronic devices (phone, computer or tablet) upon entering the U.S. University travellers should use their discretion as these risks may change at any time.

CAUT released an article about travel to the U.S. Read the full statement here.
