The Government of Canada recently introduced a Buy Canadian Policy, which encourages federal departments and agencies to prioritize Canadian suppliers and Canadian made goods and services whenever possible. To reflect this initiative, the federal government’s research funding agencies have incorporated new guidance related to this policy in a recent update of the Tri-Agency Guide on Financial Administration.
When Canadian-made materials, equipment or services are available, cost-effective and suitable, grant holders will be expected to choose them. As many specialized research tools, materials and instruments are not manufactured in Canada, the policy includes appropriate exceptions to ensure researchers can continue to access the resources required for world class science.
According to government, the update reflects a shared commitment to responsible stewardship of public funds and to supporting strong, resilient Canadian supply chains – while ensuring that researchers can continue to access the tools they need to conduct world-class research.
