Research Grants (up to $8,000 each) are available to students, faculty members, and staff affiliated with Memorial University or other institutions, and non-affiliated scholars to help defray the costs of research projects. Applications are evaluated by a multi-disciplinary Awards Panel according to their relevance to the Smallwood Foundation mandate and the merits of the proposals and the applicants. The Awards Panel recommends which applicants to fund and in what amounts. The recommendations are made to the Executive Committee which makes the final decisions. Once awarded, research grants are normally tenable for one year.
Note: Priority will be given to new applicants or former applicants with new projects. Those applying to extend a previously funded project should provide an update on progress since the last application and clarify what new work is proposed under the current application. The same applicant will not normally be funded more than two times over a three-year period.
The Foundation recognizes that some projects have multiple funding sources. However, in the application budgets, researchers should only list items that they are requesting be funded by the requested Smallwood Foundation grant. Elements of the project already funded by other sources, or which might be part of a future funding request, should not be listed.
This opportunity must be submitted for Departmental review and HSS administrative review via Memorial's Researcher Portal (RP) prior to submission to Research Initiatives and Services (RIS) for adjudication. Please add "Heather C. O'Brien (Grants Facilitator)" and “Matthew Milner (Grants Facilitator)” as "Team Members" on the RP file. Once your Department and the HSS Dean's Office have approved the RP file, the application is routed to RGCS as official submission to the competition.
In addition to the RP file submission, applicants who intend to apply to other funding opportunities related to the project outlined in the application must email a completed and up to date multiple-application funding template XLSX spreadsheet to the Grants Facilitation Officer handling this competition. Directions are provided in the attached template.
In accordance with University-wide approval protocols, all tabs of the RP file must be completed, the completed application must be uploaded to the “Attachments” tab, all supporting documentation including support for cash and in-kind commitments and/or letters of support must also be uploaded, and “Submit” must be pressed prior to the HSS internal deadline listed below. HSS cannot guarantee completion of an administrative review for application files that are incomplete and/or are submitted after the HSS deadline. For more detailed submission instructions and information, please consult the HSS Research Support Services website.
If you plan to apply to this competition or other research funding opportunities (as either PI or CI), e-mail an HSS Grants Facilitator, Heather C. O’Brien (HSSResearchAdmin@mun.ca or 864-8603) or Matthew Milner (HSSResearchGrants@mun.ca or 864-8050), to notify the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of your intent to apply. E-mailing the intent to apply as early as possible will help to facilitate an efficient review. A Grants Facilitator can answer any questions you may have about internal or external submission procedures and may also be able to help with proposal development.
