Description

Building on almost a decade of federal investment in youth health and well-being, the purpose of this funding opportunity is to support research teams that bring evidence to at least two of the six youth-identified priorities of Canada’s Youth Policy to inform meaningful change that improves youth health and well-being. The six priority areas are: Leadership and Impact; Health and Wellness; Innovation, Skills and Learning; Employment; Truth and Reconciliation; Environment and Climate Action.

This funding opportunity is a direct response to calls for Canada to do better when it comes to youth health and wellness, particularly with historically excluded or underrepresented youth,1,2,3 and to put diverse youth and youth voices at the centre of multi-dimensional solutions to youth-identified priorities.4,5. While Canada offers some of the best economic, environmental, and social conditions for growing up, UNICEF reports that Canada ranked 30th out of 38 wealthy countries for children and youth physical health and survival, 28th out of 39 countries on children’s environmental conditions and well-being, and 33rd out of 39 countries for children and youth overweight. The report cards also show that health and well-being are unevenly distributed among children and youth in Canada, with a greater risk of illness falling on those most marginalized by income, race, and disability. These Healthy Youth Team Grants are part of the Healthy Youth Initiative that strives to bring research evidence to policy to make meaningful change in youth health and wellness.

This funding opportunity builds on two rounds of Planning and Dissemination Grants (Summer 2022, Winter 2022) and two rounds of Healthy Youth Catalyst Grants (Fall 2022, Fall 2023) in addition to a Healthy Youth Summit (Summer 2023) that brought together youth and youth health researchers with other interested parties to identify gaps and opportunities in youth health research. Applicants are encouraged to review the Healthy Youth Summit webpage, including key findings and youth-led report.

Submission Procedures

The Intent to Apply (EOI/LOI/NOI) does not require review from HSS or RIS. However, please e-mail a pdf of the submitted EOI/LOI/NOI to an HSS Grants Facilitator: Heather C. O’Brien (HSSResearchAdmin@mun.ca or 864-8603) or Matthew Milner (HSSResearchGrants@mun.ca or 864-8050).

Full Application Submission Procedures: In addition to the external funding agency’s submission procedures, this opportunity must also be submitted for Departmental, HSS Faculty, and Research Initiatives and Services (RIS) institutional reviews and approvals via Memorial's Researcher Portal (RP). In order to facilitate the HSS Faculty’s administrative review, please ensure "Heather C. In accordance with University-wide approval protocols, all tabs of the RP file must be completed, the completed application must be uploaded to the “Attachments” tab, all supporting documentation including support for cash and in-kind commitments and/or letters of support must also be uploaded, and “Submit” must be pressed prior to the HSS internal deadline listed below. HSS cannot guarantee completion of an administrative review for application files that are incomplete and/or are submitted after the HSS deadline. For more detailed submission instructions and information, please consult the HSS Research Support Services website.

If you plan to apply to this competition or other research funding opportunities (as either PI or CI), e-mail an HSS Grants Facilitator, Heather C.
