Description

ISER Research Grants (up to $8,000 each) are available to Memorial University graduate students and faculty members, as well as independent scholars and faculty members from other Universities, to help defray the costs of such items as travel, subsistence, research assistance and materials and supplies for carrying out an approved research project; capital expenditures are not eligible. Applications are evaluated by an Awards Panel according to their relevance to the ISER mandate and the merits of the proposals and the applicants. HSS applicants are given priority. The Awards Panel recommends which applicants to fund and in what amounts. The recommendations are made to the Executive Committee which makes the final decisions.
Notes:

  1. An applicant will be limited to a maximum of two research grants over a three-year period.
  2. Priority is given to new applicants or former applicants with new projects. Those applying to extend a previously funded project should provide an update on progress since the last application.
  3. Applicants for ISER Fellowships who are applying for a research grant to complement their research may use the fellowship application form. There is no need to submit a separate research grant application.

To apply for a research grant:

  • Fill in and digitally sign the Research Grant Application.
  • Fill in the Applicant section on the Letter of Appraisal form and then email it to the referee so they can fill in their section. These letters are sent directly by referees to iser@mun.ca for both internal and external applicants.
  • Internal applicants should upload their completed applications and additional materials to the Memorial Researcher Portal.

Submission Procedures

In addition to the funder's submission procedures, this opportunity must also be submitted for Departmental and HSS Faculty reviews and approvals via Memorial's Researcher Portal (RP). In order to facilitate the HSS Faculty’s administrative review, please ensure "Heather C. O'Brien (Grants Facilitator)" and “Matthew Milner (Grants Facilitator)” are added as "Team Members" on your RP file. 

In accordance with University-wide approval protocols, all tabs of the RP file must be completed, the completed application must be uploaded to the “Attachments” tab, all supporting documentation including support for cash and in-kind commitments and/or letters of support must also be uploaded, and “Submit” must be pressed prior to the HSS internal deadline listed below. HSS cannot guarantee completion of an administrative review for application files that are incomplete and/or are submitted after the HSS deadline. For more detailed submission instructions and information, please consult the HSS Research Support Services website.

E-mailing the intent to apply as early as possible will help to facilitate an efficient review. A Grants Facilitator can answer any questions you may have about internal or external submission procedures.
