The purpose of this fund is to help researchers at all University of the Arctic member institutions, those in the North and those in the South, establish new relationships or strengthen the existing ones in order to develop collaborative, co-created research projects based on mutual respect and acknowledgment of the deep understanding and knowledge Indigenous and northern people bring to such projects while ensuring that the academic research and engagement projects meet the needs of the people and the regions where such research takes place. This fund is a maximum total of $15,000 over a one-year duration.
Who can apply for these funds? University of the Arctic and Memorial University encourage engagement between northern Canadian University of the Arctic member institutions, other Canadian members, and other University of the Arctic member institutions for these initiatives. The lead applicant must come from a Canadian Arctic/northern University of the Arctic member institution. A complete and updated list of member institutions can be found on the University of the Arctic website.
If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to Lisa Goulet. For full application criteria, procedures, timelines, eligible funding costs, and a link to the application portal, please see the website.
This opportunity must be submitted through TWO portals:
Create the UArctic application in the OPE/Harris Centre portal https://publicengagementmemorial.smapply.io/acc/l/?next=/prog/ and add Heather C. O'Brien (hssresearchadmin@mun.ca) and Matthew Milner (hssresearchgrants@mun.ca) as collaborators with read-only access. Complete the entire application EXCEPT the field for the ROMEO/RP file number.
Create a Memorial Researcher Portal (RP) file and add "Heather C. O'Brien (Grants Facilitator)" and “Matthew Milner (Grants Facilitator)” as "Team Members" on the RP file. Upload a generated PDF of the application from the OPE/Harris Centre portal, and also upload all other supporting documentation that may be required for contributions or commitments, or clearances such as RIIG, etc.
Submit the RP file, which routes it for Departmental and HSS Faculty approvals.
Once approved by both department and faculty, the RP will generate an 8-digit ROMEO number. This number is entered into the OPE/Harris Centre's portal. Remove Heather & Matt as collaborators; you may then submit the application.
If awarded, you will submit the award letter through an "Event-Agreement" in the RP against the ROMEO number associated with the UArctic grant.
In accordance with University-wide approval protocols, all tabs of the RP file must be completed, the completed application must be uploaded to the “Attachments” tab, all supporting documentation including support for cash and in-kind commitments and/or letters of support must also be uploaded, and “Submit” must be pressed prior to the HSS internal deadline listed below. HSS cannot guarantee completion of an administrative review for application files that are incomplete and/or are submitted after the HSS deadline. For more detailed submission instructions and information, please consult the HSS Research Support Services website.
If you plan to apply to this competition or other research funding opportunities (as either PI or CI), e-mail an HSS Grants Facilitator, Heather C. O’Brien (HSSResearchAdmin@mun.ca or 864-8603) or Matthew Milner (HSSResearchGrants@mun.ca or 864-8050), to notify the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of your intent to apply. E-mailing the intent to apply as early as possible will help to facilitate an efficient review. A Grants Facilitator can answer any questions you may have about internal or external submission procedures and may also be able to help with proposal development.
