This initiative aims to foster engagement and collaboration of Northern Canadians, including Indigenous peoples, within the UArctic network, with a specific focus on supporting participation and perspectives in UArctic activities and events. Priority for funding will be for Northern and Indigenous UArctic member faculty, students, community knowledge holders, Chairs and Thematic Network leads.
This program is made possible through the Global Arctic Leadership Initiative and supported by Global Affairs Canada.
The fund will provide up to $5,000 CAD in travel support to:
Students, faculty, and staff attending Arctic-related conferences, workshops, and meetings.
Institutionally-sponsored travel support for community knowledge holders.
UArctic Chairs and Thematic Network Leads representing UArctic at Arctic-related events.
To apply, please complete the application form, including a detailed budget and any supporting documentation through Memorial University’s Survey Apply system. Community member support requests must be sponsored by faculty, while student travel requests must be supported by a supervising professor.
For further inquiries, please contact Lisa Goulet, UArctic Membership Engagement Coordinator, at lisa.goulet@uarctic.org.
See here for more information.
This opportunity must be submitted through TWO portals:
Create the UArctic application in the OPE/Harris Centre portal https://publicengagementmemorial.smapply.io/acc/l/?next=/prog/ and add Heather C. O'Brien (hssresearchadmin@mun.ca) and Matthew Milner (hssresearchgrants@mun.ca) as collaborators with read-only access. Complete the entire application EXCEPT the field for the ROMEO/RP file number.
Create a Memorial Researcher Portal (RP) file and add "Heather C. O'Brien (Grants Facilitator)" and “Matthew Milner (Grants Facilitator)” as "Team Members" on the RP file. Upload a generated PDF of the application from the OPE/Harris Centre portal, and also upload all other supporting documentation that may be required for contributions or commitments, or clearances such as RIIG, etc.
Submit the RP file, which routes it for Departmental and HSS Faculty approvals.
Once approved by both department and faculty, the RP will generate an 8-digit ROMEO number. This number is entered into the OPE/Harris Centre's portal. Remove Heather & Matt as collaborators; you may then submit the application.
If awarded, you will submit the award letter through an "Event-Agreement" in the RP against the ROMEO number associated with the UArctic grant.
In accordance with University-wide approval protocols, all tabs of the RP file must be completed, the completed application must be uploaded to the “Attachments” tab, all supporting documentation including support for cash and in-kind commitments and/or letters of support must also be uploaded, and “Submit” must be pressed prior to the HSS internal deadline listed below. HSS cannot guarantee completion of an administrative review for application files that are incomplete and/or are submitted after the HSS deadline. For more detailed submission instructions and information, please consult the HSS Research Support Services website.
If you plan to apply to this competition or other research funding opportunities (as either PI or CI), e-mail an HSS Grants Facilitator, Heather C. O’Brien (HSSResearchAdmin@mun.ca or 864-8603) or Matthew Milner (HSSResearchGrants@mun.ca or 864-8050), to notify the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of your intent to apply. E-mailing the intent to apply as early as possible will help to facilitate an efficient review. A Grants Facilitator can answer any questions you may have about internal or external submission procedures and may also be able to help with proposal development.
