Description

April 2, 2025 Update: Discontinuation of Elevate and the Introduction of $20K Accelerate for Postdoctoral Fellows

As part of our ongoing review and streamlining of programs, Elevate as a standalone program will be replaced with a $20,000 per internship ($60,000 per year) postdoctoral funding model within Accelerate. This change is effective April 1, 2025 for new applications. Existing Elevate applications will continue unchanged until completion of the project.

Key Transition Details:

  • Final Submission Deadline for Elevate Applications: Any draft applications or those requiring sign-off in our portal must be submitted by April 30, 2025

  • New Postdoctoral Funding Model: Starting April 1, 2025, postdoctoral funding will be available through Accelerate under the new $20K per internship structure in addition to the existing $15K per internship model, providing postdoctoral fellows with $60,000 per year.

Application Process Updates:

  • Please continue to refer to our website for information about how to apply. Many Accelerate applications can be submitted through our digital process.

Accelerate 20K for postdoctoral fellows will be completed via the non-digital application also found on our website.

Mitacs Elevate trains emerging research management leaders through an exclusive professional development curriculum. Fellows gain theoretical and experiential training in areas such as project management and presentations. The knowledge transfer supported by Elevate increases research quality and overall efficiencies within a research group.

The Elevate program offers:

Successful applicants receive a Mitacs Elevate award of $60,000 per year, for a total award of $120,000 for two-year projects, as well as the mandatory research management training curriculum. A minimum stipend/salary of $55,000 per year is allocated to the fellow, and up to $5,000 is allocated to research costs. Mitacs follows tri-council guidelines with respect to the use of funds towards eligible research costs. Awards are typically forwarded annually as a lump sum of $60,000 to the supervising faculty member, to be held as a research grant at their home academic institution, pending Mitacs’s receipt of the following:

  • the $30,000 annual partner contribution

  • any necessary documentation such as a Declaration of Conflict of Interest and/or other documentation as appropriate

Once the application is complete, you must then submit for Departmental, HSS Faculty, and Research Initiatives and Services (RIS) institutional reviews and approvals via Memorial's Researcher Portal (RP). In order to facilitate the HSS Faculty’s administrative review, please ensure "Heather C. O'Brien (Grants Facilitator)" and “Matthew Milner (Grants Facilitator)” are added as "Team Members" on your RP file.

In accordance with University-wide approval protocols, all tabs of the RP file must be completed, the completed application must be uploaded to the “Attachments” tab, all supporting documentation including support for cash and in-kind commitments and/or letters of support must also be uploaded, and “Submit” must be pressed in order for HSS to begin its administrative review and provide approvals. HSS cannot guarantee timely completion of an administrative review for application files that are incomplete. For more detailed submission instructions and information, please consult the HSS Research Support Services website.

If you plan to apply to this competition or other research funding opportunities (as either PI or CI), e-mail an HSS Grants Facilitator, Heather C. O’Brien (HSSResearchAdmin@mun.ca or 864-8603) or Matthew Milner (HSSResearchGrants@mun.ca or 864-8050), to notify the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of your intent to apply. E-mailing the intent to apply as early as possible will help to facilitate an efficient review. A Grants Facilitator can answer any questions you may have about internal or external submission procedures and may also be able to help with proposal development.
