Description

The Research and Innovation Fund Program provides non-repayable contributions to non-commercial entities for the development and implementation of research and development and innovation projects to support economic development in Newfoundland and Labrador. The goal is to support highly-qualified people, research, innovative programming and infrastructure in priority areas that have the potential to strengthen R&D and innovation ecosystem capacity in the province. 

Eligible Applicants

Eligible applicants include:

  • Public and not-for profit academic and research institutions

  • Industry associations

  • Municipalities

  • Other not-for-profit groups including economic development organizations

NOTE:

  • Applicants must be incorporated.

  • Research applicants with MUN and CNA must hold full-time positions for two or more years.

Eligible Activities

  • Academic-led, industry-relevant R&D that involves new or improved collaboration with business or industry partners. Projects must align with strategic priorities, industry needs, development opportunities, and demonstrates potential for economic impact in NL.

  • Academic-led, industry-relevant R&D in priority areas that have an identified funding gap and leverage targeted sources of non-provincial public funding.

  • Projects that support a strong start-up community and entrepreneurial support networks through which research ideas, business innovation and early stage supports maximize opportunities for innovators and advance provincial economic growth and diversification goals.

  • Applied research projects that leverage community or regional resources or assets to build capacity and extend research and innovation programming province-wide.

  • Targeted initiatives to foster research and innovation partnerships and collaboration locally, regionally, nationally and internationally and builds strong linkages between industry, innovation partners and academic research.


Submission Procedures

In addition to the external funding agency’s submission procedures, this opportunity must also be submitted for Departmental, HSS Faculty, and Research Initiatives and Services (RIS) institutional reviews and approvals via Memorial's Researcher Portal (RP). In order to facilitate the HSS Faculty’s administrative review, please ensure "Heather C. O'Brien (Grants Facilitator)" and “Matthew Milner (Grants Facilitator)” are added as "Team Members" on your RP file. 

In accordance with University-wide approval protocols, all tabs of the RP file must be completed, the completed application must be uploaded to the “Attachments” tab, all supporting documentation including support for cash and in-kind commitments and/or letters of support must also be uploaded, and “Submit” must be pressed prior to the HSS internal deadline listed below. HSS cannot guarantee completion of an administrative review for application files that are incomplete and/or are submitted after the HSS deadline. For more detailed submission instructions and information, please consult the HSS Research Support Services website.

O’Brien (HSSResearchAdmin@mun.ca or 864-8603) or Matthew Milner (HSSResearchGrants@mun.ca or 864-8050), to notify the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of your intent to apply. E-mailing the intent to apply as early as possible will help to facilitate an efficient review. A Grants Facilitator can answer any questions you may have about internal or external submission procedures and may also be able to help with proposal development.
