Description

***Note that the Mitacs deadline has been extended from June 10 to June 17, 2026.

Mitacs Globalink Research Internship(GRI) is now accepting faculty applications for Summer 2027. The GRI program pairs professors in Canada with high achieving international undergraduates from eligible countries for 12-week summer internships. The 2027 call for applications is now open. To submit your project(s), please click here.

Expand the potential of highly skilled international students, broaden your department’s research horizons, and play a key role in promoting Canada as a top destination for the world’s brightest minds through the Globalink Research Internship. The 12-week initiative pairs faculty with undergraduate students from eligible international academic institutions for a full-time internship, allowing professors to help further the intern’s research, and interns to supplement their learning through participation in career-building training courses and conferences. The Globalink program builds international networks and positions Canada as a top research and innovation destination for emerging talent around the world.

Why should a professor apply to GRI?

  • The Globalink Research Internship submission process is fast and simple. Previous participants can log into their account to update their profile (email address, institution, etc.), as well as to access, and submit projects. They can also resubmit past projects that were put forward for matching in previous years.

  • Participating faculty have the possibility of increasing their research/profile internationally, and to create international networks between their host institutions and international students.

  • Successful faculty receive elite undergraduates from our partner countries to support their research.

  • Faculty moving to the matching phase are able to preview top international students from a pool of thousands of applicants.

The GRI cycle is a year-long process with specific milestones. It begins with the Faculty Call from mid-April to mid-June, whereby professors from across the country are invited to submit their research projects to Mitacs.

  • Top-ranked senior undergrads travel to Canada.

  • Faculty can submit multiple projects (and re-submit from previous years).

  • Financial Support: Mitacs provides financial support for interns: including airfare, housing stipends, insurance, and enrollment fees, requiring no direct funding from the faculty’s research grant.

  • No Industry Partner Required: Unlike other Mitacs programs, the GRI is a purely academic initiative open to all disciplines.

In order to be eligible for hosting interns as part of the Globalink Research Internship program, Faculty must:

  1. Have one of the following statuses at an eligible institution: Full professor, Associate professor, Assistant professor, Adjunct professor, Emeritus professor

  2. Be able to supervise international students at your institution

  3. Be able to host interns within the GRI program’s required timeframe. Internships must begin between May 1 and July 31 and run for 12 consecutive weeks.
