Proposals are now invited for the Canada Research Chairs Program (CRCP). Please see the attached Call for all of the details, including the required approval form to accompany proposal submissions.
The Canada Research Chairs Program (CRCP) stands at the centre of a national strategy to make Canada one of the world’s top countries in research and development. It invests approximately $311 million per year to attract and retain a diverse cadre of world-class researchers, to reinforce academic research and training excellence in Canadian postsecondary institutions.
Chairholders aim to achieve research excellence in engineering and the natural sciences, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences. They improve our depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthen Canada’s international competitiveness, and help train the next generation of highly skilled people through student supervision, teaching, and the coordination of other researchers’ work.
Memorial’s Canada Research Chair Oversight Committee is currently seeking proposals from academic units to initiate searches for internal and external nominees for 5 available Canada Research Chair (CRC) positions (note that there are no SSHRC positions this round):
Tier 1, NSERC, 2 positions
Tier 1, CIHR, 1 position
Tier 2, CIHR, 2 positions
Research themes
All received proposals must demonstrate the CRC’s support of at least one of Memorial’s Strategic Research Themes as per the institution’s Research Strategy 2023-28. In keeping with the goals of the Research Strategy to foster research excellence and interdisciplinary collaborations, joint proposals from Faculties / Schools will be considered.
Deadlines
HSS: Sept. 24, 2026. However, please contact the HSS Associate Dean (Research) and the HSS GFOs far in advance of deadline to discuss your unit's interest in this call since it is the responsibility of the Faculty/School to obtain written confirmation from the Provost that they have access to each position they wish to fill. This written confirmation must be included with each proposal submission.
RIS: 4:00 pm on October 1, 2026.
All applicants will normally be notified via email of the results within 4 -5 weeks of the internal deadline. If you have any questions about this current CRC competition, please contact your Associate Dean (Research) and RIS (ris@mun.ca). See below document for full details on proposal format and approval requirements.
Internal Memorial Process: This competition involves a Memorial institutional internal adjudication or nomination process prior to submission to the external agency or sponsor. This process first requires Departmental and HSS Faculty approval and endorsement and does not use Memorial's Researcher Portal at this stage.
Faculty of HSS Submission Procedures (mandatory): This opportunity must be submitted for Departmental and HSS Faculty approvals by the above deadline prior to proceeding for institutional adjudication. To begin, please email Associate Dean (Research) Meghan Burchell (assocdeanreshss@mun.ca) to begin discussions with your department and the faculty on your idea. You will work with your department head and Dr. Burchell in the develoopment of the proposal for the internal adjuciation committee.
For those proposals selected by Memorial’s Canada Research Chair Oversight Committee, units will work with Memorial’s Research Initiatives & Services (RIS) to begin an open search for a CRC nominee.
