Last year, Mitacs piloted a Peer Mentoring initiative focused on supporting women in STEM, pairing first-time Mitacs interns with experienced peers to foster professional development, skills growth, and community building. The pilot was well received, with participants reporting high satisfaction and positive outcomes. Building on this success, Mitacs will be launching new Peer Mentoring cohorts for 2026–27.
This year, the Peer Mentoring initiative has been intentionally expanded to support a broader and more diverse group of Mitacs interns, building on its initial focus on women in STEM. Key updates include:
Expanded program eligibility, including Mitacs interns participating in both the Accelerate and the Business Strategy Internship (BSI) programs.
Broader disciplinary and gender inclusion, extending participation beyond women in STEM to also include interns of all genders in the social sciences, humanities, and arts (SSHA).
An increased scale, enabling Mitacs to support a larger cohort of mentor–mentee pairings across member institutions.
Participation in the Peer Mentoring initiative is open to students participating in a Mitacs internship at full and associate member institutions only.
