This RFP’s purpose is to produce research designed to analyze how Atlantic Indigenous communities and businesses can replicate success in proven fisheries models.

Atlantic First Nations have used fisheries to help survive since time immemorial. In modern times, we have become more involved in the fishing industry via moderate livelihood or large commercial operations. Like any major economic endeavour, there are community socioeconomic impacts and spinoffs that have positive results. This can correlate with increases in many areas including – but not limited to – own-source revenue, job creation, income and wealth build-up, asset acquisition, and spending (to name a few). These numerous growths connect with funding for social programing, education and training, finance departments, economic development, and overall governance in the community. This study will examine a successful community’s fisheries model. It will review why and how it is successful, measure the aforementioned impacts, and layout how such a successful model can be replicated and shared with other communities for their fisheries models. The long-term plan would be to increase productivity and success of communities and their fisheries operations that follow and model the successful highlighted one in the study.

The research activities will include, but are not limited to, reviewing and analyzing successful a community’s fisheries model, both by literature review and interviews/focus group meetings with Atlantic Indigenous economic development leaders and or stakeholders (e.g., Fisheries’ Directors). Such research activities and engagements will have a successful community’s fisheries model, and with that, opportunities for Atlantic Indigenous communities and businesses at the forefront in the economic development context. The research project will suggest how Atlantic Indigenous communities and businesses can replicate these successful fisheries models for themselves via best practices, recommendations, and calls to action. The research project will also advise on steps Atlantic Indigenous communities and businesses should undertake for thorough involvement.
