Description

***Please note the new, earlier deadline.

Research Grants (up to $8,000 each) are available to students, faculty members, and staff affiliated with Memorial University or other institutions, and non-affiliated scholars to help defray the costs of research projects. Applications are evaluated by a multi-disciplinary Awards Panel according to their relevance to the Smallwood Foundation mandate and the merits of the proposals and the applicants. The Awards Panel recommends which applicants to fund and in what amounts. The recommendations are made to the Executive Committee which makes the final decisions. Once awarded, research grants are normally tenable for one year.

Note: Priority will be given to new applicants or former applicants with new projects. Those applying to extend a previously funded project should provide an update on progress since the last application and clarify what new work is proposed under the current application. The same applicant will not normally be funded more than two times over a three-year period.

The Foundation recognizes that some projects have multiple funding sources. However, in the application budgets, researchers should only list items that they are requesting be funded by the requested Smallwood Foundation grant. Elements of the project already funded by other sources, or which might be part of a future funding request, should not be listed.

Submission Procedures

This opportunity must be submitted through Memorial's Researcher Portal (RP). To do so, you should:

  1. Complete the application form, as downloaded from the Smallwood/ISER webpage, and collect all additional documentation, as applicable to your project; for example Indigenous consent or, if you intend to apply to other funding opportunities related to your project, complete a multiple-application funding template XLSX spreadsheet (see attachment, below).

  2. If you must also obtain a letter of Appraisal, you should request this far in advace. The appraiser will email the letter directly to the Smallwood/ISER office.

  3. Create a Memorial Researcher Portal (RP) file and add "Heather C. O'Brien (Grants Facilitator)" and “Matthew Milner (Grants Facilitator)” as "Team Members" on the RP file. See detailed instructions on how to complete the RP file for a Smallwood or ISER grant here.

  4. Submit the RP file, which routes it for Departmental and HSS Faculty approvals.

  5. Once approved by both department and faculty, the RP will route to Research, Initiatives and Services (RIS). It will be this unit that will collate all of the paplications and officially submit them to Smallwood/ISER office by the Smallwood/ISER deadline.

  6. If awarded, you will submit the award letter through an "Event-Agreement" in the RP against the ROMEO number associated with your grant.

In accordance with University-wide approval protocols, all tabs of the RP file must be completed, the completed application must be uploaded to the “Attachments” tab, all supporting documentation including support for cash and in-kind commitments and/or letters of support must also be uploaded, and “Submit” must be pressed prior to the HSS internal deadline listed below. HSS cannot guarantee completion of an administrative review for application files that are incomplete and/or are submitted after the HSS deadline. For more detailed submission instructions and information, please consult the HSS Research Support Services website.

If you plan to apply to this competition or other research funding opportunities (as either PI or CI), e-mail an HSS Grants Facilitator, Heather C. O’Brien (HSSResearchAdmin@mun.ca or 864-8603) or Matthew Milner (HSSResearchGrants@mun.ca or 864-8050), to notify the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of your intent to apply. E-mailing the intent to apply as early as possible will help to facilitate an efficient review. A Grants Facilitator can answer any questions you may have about internal or external submission procedures and may also be able to help with proposal development.
