University Research Professors have acquired a designation above the rank of full professor. The title is the most prestigious award the university gives for research, and goes to faculty who have demonstrated a consistently high level of scholarship, including graduate student supervision and other mentoring activities, and whose research is of a truly international stature. The award carries with it a lifetime designation and a unrestricted research grant of $25,000.

University Research Professor (URP) honours faculty members who have demonstrated a consistently high level of scholarship in their field, including graduate student supervision and mentoring activities, and whose contributions to their discipline are of a significant international stature. The URP has acquired a designation above the rank of full professor. The title is the most prestigious award the university gives for research and/or creative activity.

In the context of this award, research refers to peer-reviewed, juried, adjudicated or equivalent research/scholarly work including creative activity and performance.
