The Trust supports strong collaborations on small-scale “do-able” projects developed to meet local community needs. The primary focus of the project shall be on engaging directly and closely with one or more specific local-level communities, aiming to ‘make a difference’ for the local people. Projects should be designed to produce direct benefits to the community(ies) in addressing environmental, socio-economic and/or coastal management issues, and in potentially developing corresponding research methods, products and services.

Proposals are invited from qualified individuals seeking financial support to undertake collaborative research projects that focus on understanding and implementing conservation and sustainable development in coastal areas.

Area Focus Eligibility Proposals should have a specific emphasis on improving livelihoods and meeting needs of those living in coastal communities, and also have a focus on one or more of the following topic areas:

  • addressing coastal environmental and resource management problems,

  • carrying out policy studies on coastal community well-being,

  • improving conservation of coastal ecosystems and their biodiversity,

  • assisting in the responsible development of coastal areas,

  • engaging in coastal community social and economic development,

  • carrying out coastal biodiversity studies or marine species identification.

Submission Procedures

In addition to the external funding agency’s submission procedures, this opportunity must also be submitted for Departmental, HSS Faculty, and Research Initiatives and Services (RIS) institutional reviews and approvals via Memorial's Researcher Portal (RP). In order to facilitate the HSS Faculty’s administrative review, please ensure "Heather C. O'Brien (Grants Facilitator)" and “Matthew Milner (Grants Facilitator)” are added as "Team Members" on your RP file.

In accordance with University-wide approval protocols, all tabs of the RP file must be completed, the completed application must be uploaded to the “Attachments” tab, all supporting documentation including support for cash and in-kind commitments and/or letters of support must also be uploaded, and “Submit” must be pressed prior to the HSS internal deadline listed below. HSS cannot guarantee completion of an administrative review for application files that are incomplete and/or are submitted after the HSS deadline. For more detailed RP submission instructions and information, please consult the "How Do I...?" page of HSS Research Support Services website.

If you plan to apply to this competition or other research funding opportunities (as either PI or CI), contact an HSS Grants Facilitation Officer (GFO), Heather C. O’Brien (HSSResearchAdmin@mun.ca, 864-8603) or Matthew Milner (HSSResearchGrants@mun.ca, 864-8050), to notify the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) of your intent to apply. Informing HSS of youir intent to apply early, may make it possible for you to avail of HSS's proposal development supports and will help facilitate an efficient final review. A GFO can also answer any questions you may have about internal or external submission procedures.
