On Monday, April 13, 2026, WorkplaceNL will start accepting preliminary proposal applications for the General Research Stream. The general research stream is an annual call for research proposals from qualified researchers. Research proposals must demonstrate a clear focus on the promotion of workplace health and safety. WorkplaceNL funds up to four general research projects each year. Researchers must finish their projects and provide all deliverables within two years of the start date in the funding agreement. After a proposal is approved, WorkplaceNL and the applicant organization must sign a memorandum of agreement before work on the research project begins.
See the below link for the Preliminary Proposal Application Guide and Form, plus important program details about eligibility, project funding and duration limits, important dates, funding guidelines and project deliverables. Only the form on the web page can be accepted for your application; please do not send WorkplaceNL an application prior to April 13, 2026 or using a different form.
Two-stage application process
Stage 1 – preliminary proposal: Researchers submit a preliminary proposal by the deadline using WorkplaceNL’s form. Proposals are screened against program criteria.
Stage 2 – full proposal: If the preliminary proposal passes screening, WorkplaceNL may invite the researcher to submit a full proposal, which we evaluate for funding. Only full proposals invited by WorkplaceNL by the deadline will be evaluated for funding. Full proposals must include two letters of support from relevant organizations or individuals who can attest to the public need for the identified research.
An invitation to submit a full proposal does not guarantee funding.
The Preliminary Proposals application window will be open until 4:00pm NST on Friday, May 8, 2026. WorkplaceNL thanks all researchers for their interest in the program, but only completed Preliminary Proposal Application Forms received from eligible researchers within the application window will be considered for invitation to the Full Proposal phase.
Deadline to submit full proposals: July 10, 2026 @ 4:00 p.m., NDST

This application’s Letter of Intent (LOI/EOI/NOI) does not require review by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) or Research Initiatives and Services (RIS). If you are invited to develop a full proposal and a Departmental, HSS Dean's Office and/or Memorial University signature and/or institutional letter of support is requested, in addition to the external funding agency’s submission procedures, you will also be required to submit the proposal through Memorial's Researcher Portal (RP). In these instances, in order to facilitate the HSS Faculty’s administrative review, please ensure "Heather C. O'Brien (Grants Facilitator)" and “Matthew Milner (Grants Facilitator)” are added as "Team Members" on your RP file.
In accordance with University-wide approval protocols, all tabs of the RP file must be completed, the completed application must be uploaded to the “Attachments” tab, all supporting documentation including support for cash and in-kind commitments and/or letters of support must also be uploaded, and “Submit” must be pressed prior to the HSS internal deadline listed below. HSS cannot guarantee completion of an administrative review for application files that are incomplete and/or are submitted after the HSS deadline. For more detailed submission instructions and information, please consult the HSS Research Support Services website.
