A value-based, anticolonial science lab

Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR) is an interdisciplinary science laboratory that specializes in anticolonial methodologies. While our day-to-day research is on plastic pollution research, this work is a site to develop research methods that foreground humility, good land relations, and an awareness of how colonialism is part of everyday scientific methods, including those thought to be objective and value-neutral. We create, test, and use methodologies such as community peer review, Indigenous data sovereignty, community peer review, place-based metrics, ceremony, refusal, and capacity-sharing in science. Through our day-to-day lab work, we aim to change how science is done.
